I am looking into doing some painting with a HVLP gun and was wondering what size air compresser I would need to do the painting effectively. The finished product will not be show worthy just a lot prettier than what it is now. I am not sure what brand of gun I will be using yet either. Thanks
Brad

SATA HVLP guns require 17cfm to perform. You can get away with 12-15cfm with a Tiwaneese gun but you will want to watch your gun pressure to make sure it doesn't fall off too much as you spray. You know how that will end up looking.

I was hoping to get by with my fathers air compresser, but I don't think it will be big enough. I think it is only a 7 gal tank with a 2.5 hp motor. I would have to use a friends spray gun and not sure of the requirements for his model. Thanks for the info.

I'd forget the hvlp with the 2.5hp/7g tank.. however.. you can get near show quality with a 9/14$ chinese paint gun and your compressor.

I've painted a tractor a year for the past 5 years. My first 3 tractors were painted using a 14$ gun that was marked down to 9$, a 19$ air reg/filter, and a chinese 79$ 2hp/4g air compressor. I did plumb in a 10g air tank that is used to fill tires, using a t-connector. Also I added an inline air filter for 6$.. on the last one.. though it wasn't needed.

You take your time and that rig works fine. I can tell you that I used less expensive TSC BPS paint.. the cheap gun and compressor, and got superior work. 90% of the finish look is the metal prep.. not the paint gun or paint...

Hey Brad. I just went through this with my new HVLP guns. I am not a painter by any stretch of the imagination but I like to learn and I like to do it myself on these old tractors. It gives me a sense of pride when I take my work out on the farm and see how it holds up. I bought the new HVLP guns to spray my old Massey TO 35. It works great. I have painted parts and pieces at a time and it works great. Just remember to keep turning the pressure up at the gun until your paint flows. I was used to the old guns where 10 to 15lbs of pressure was good. With the new HVLP gun, I found that something around 25 to 30lbs at the gun works best. I have an old Craftsman 30 gallon horizontal with a 5 horse compressor motor and it did exceptionally well. If you were going into business or buying one to do sandblasting, you would need considerably more. Hope this helps.

I finally bought a craftsman 7hp with an 80 gal tank. I think it will handle anything I need from it as I like my sandblasters also to have plenty of back up pressure.

I have been looking at HVLP guns also, and found that the CFM's on your compressor is the most important thing to look for. Take a look at what the gun requires then decide on a compressor.
The higher CFM's you get, the more it cost.
