I have an old truck that I need to paint next summer. Anybody ever use the BPS paint (tractor paint) sold at Tractor Supply Co? Would it hold up OK if I put a clear over it? We have a lot of snow and salt here. I would rather spend $20/gallon for Farmall red, but don't want to end up with a complete mess later. Thanks.

I'm in the middle of a 1945 H project and I'm using both the BPS paint in black and the Valspar Restoration Series IH Red. I'm using hardener with both. Restoration series is great. Dries to the touch in 15 to 30 minutes and has an excellent gloss - almost impossible to paint a run - easy to spray. The BPS dries slower - even with the hardener and naphtha, but it also retains an excellent gloss. Don't know how they'll hold up yet, but I like them so far. I would spend the extra $15.00 to get the Restoration Series paint and hardener - no questions

I can't find "Valspar Restoration Series" on Valspar's web site. Is it alkyd enamel or a modified alkyd enamel? There is a difference.

There is no listing on their website. There is no listing on the TSC site. There is a shelf full of it at my local TSC. So far I recommend it highly. $37.xx a gallon and hardener at $19.xx a pint (1 gallon worth) they have a thinner for $19.xx a gallon that seems to be mostly xylene. Dries in 15 minutes with hardener and has a high gloss. Easy to paint for a novice - hard to find info about other than what is on the can.

i used several cans of BPS from tractor supply and found it to be junk. it takes a very long time to dry. although, i did expierment by adding japan drier to the paint and it dries much faster. also it helps to add some turpentine and stir it in well. gives it a very good gloss. but still for the cost and the time i had to mess with BPS, it was not quality paint. and not real cheap either.

I've had the exact opposite results. I use the valspar hardner and mix exactly to the recomendations on the piant can.. Also use naptha as a spray thinner. I have dry times that are tacky at 4 hrs in 50' weather, and in warm 80+' weather, I get tackiness in a couple hours.

You DO have to do it by the book. Mix hardner and paint and thinner.. let activate for 30+ minutes.. then use the mix within 8 hrs. If you use mineral spirits or turpentine as a thinner... expect longer drying times. The naptha makes for the best (least) dry time.

Don't even think about painting under 40 degrees.

just an FYI - Naptha is also the main and only ingredient in Zippo type lighter fluid.

Naptha? in reply to souNdguy, 02-27-2006 12:42:53
What is Naptha? Is it standard paint thinner? As you can tell I'm just tryin' to find out about paint. I don't know my enamel from apoxy, I just know International orange and black. What I cover my implements with, notice I didn't say paint as that would indicate somekind of artwork, I just cover. bjr

V&M naptha... yes.. it's a very quick drying thinner.

Id you pour some on a paper towell.. you can watch the paper towell 'dry' as it evaporates right in front of you.

For instance.. wetting a rag to clean your hands of paint... the rag usually dries out before you can get both hands done... stuff evaps that fast..

If you don't want to spend much money and will settle for Farmall red, get 2150 from your Case-IH dealer, it is an "acrylic modified alkyd enamel", much better than BPS. If you want to clear coat, use PPG or DuPonts economy Omni or Nason lines -- "economy" doesn't mean cheap, though. Your choice of colors.

Is 2150 the old letter series red, or the newer, brighter red?

CaseIH has two reds 2150 and the other is called Gloss red, the 2150 is for the older tractors and the gloss is the newer tractors 5088 style and magnums, I have used the gloss red on a plow and to me its not as dark as a magnum, still has a orange look to it

I am not clear on the color differences of the four IH reds used on the letter series-up (began on the F series in 1937) until sometime in the late 70's or 80's. Those paints are IH 50, 1937-1949; 1102, 1949-1958?; 201 1958-1961; 2150, 1961 until ?. 2150 is what Case-IH sells for the older IH tractors. I use it mixed in PPG 71310, or with a slight change in toners. To my eyes both 2150 and the PPG version have a distinct orange tint to them -- some people say the orange is not there. I would not call it a dark red, or a bright red either -- so I can't really answer your question. IH 50 can also be mixed--PPG 70019/DuPont 7410) not sure of 1102 or 201.
