The cut and paste thing you did. Please post the link. The thread below is getting too complicated. Are you sure that is for hardener, and are you sure that is not meant for body shops that have a means to get the concentration down? The major paint companies do not recommend their products to us amatures, and are likely going to prevent the sale in the not too distant future unless we jump through a few hoops.

No link to post.. their online MSDS server apparently doesn't work. i emailed them about it.. and complained a bit, as they are selling lots of chemicals with no way for the public to get MSDS on them. In any case.. they sent me the MSDS via email.. and it is for the hardener.. same part number as I posted to you, as on the can.

The way the MSDS reads, in plain english, leads you to believe that an organic cartridge on a mask is needed if concentrations in the air are above 'x'.. and logically furthering that, if concentrations are less than 'x'... looks like no mask is needed... at least be the wording on the MSDS.

I suppose it's fairly easy for Valspar to say "use the appropriate NIOSH approved respirator such as an air purifying respirator with organic vapor cartridge and dust/mist filter". However, the challenge for the poor customer is to actually find and purchase such an animal. I am doubting such a thing exists at all - at least for any product containing any of the various iso compounds. For example, here's NIOSH's summary of their documented recommendation on the matter:

1.Whenever there is potential for exposure
to diisocyanates,even concentrations
below the NIOSH REL,NIOSH recom-
mends that employees be supplied with
supplied-air respiratory protection.
(Negative pressure air-purifying respira-
tors are not recommended since
diisocyanates have poor odor warning
properties.)Also,there should be a
respiratory protection program.

Source document is here. See "Recommendations" on page 11 of 42. That is entirely consistent with the recommendations they provide in the two data sheets I linked to below

It would be interesting to see if anyone can actually produce such a "NIOSH approved" air purifying respirator for isos.

Agreed, I still want to see the actual MSDS for SouNDguy's hardener. I would think Valspar could get in a lot of trouble for printing what is in that MSDS.

I have taken the liberty of linking to one of Rod's NIOSH links. This is an up-to-date link, note that it says NOTHING about charcoal masks. In your cut and paste of the Valspar MSDS in our original post, it said if the air concentration was too high, to use a NIOSH approved mask -- Problem is there aren't any, according to the link. I imagine that Valspar's hardener has one of those compounds in it.
