Hi DJ,

I'll fully agree with B--- on this one. Single stage metallics can be difficult indeed. There are several things you have to watch and control simultaneously. You need to apply wet enough to avoid orange peel and keep a high gloss but not wet enough to yield runs. In between those narrow extremes, the metallics can get screwed up easily even w/o runs if it's a touch too wet by inadvertently relapping a small area or getting the gun a little too close - even temporarily. If that happens, you'll end up with a mess in that area. Plus if you do get a run, or mess an area, there's no sanding it down and buffing for a repair - the metallics would get screwed up in the process. What you see after the last pass is what you get, sort of like an unhardened enamel. Fixing screwups means redoing a panel, at least - which is not really a good idea because of difficulty in matching the metallic appearance in the adjacent panel. If I were to attempt a metallic job today, I'd certainly go with a bc/cc system (most likely there will be isos in the clear activator though). What tractors have metallic finishes? Or are you just looking to spice up the appearance.

Don't know of any tractors with metallic, at least not the older ones. I do use a silver-argent single stage metallic on the rims, actually it is a GM rally wheel color. I chose it because it has the "correct" color, not because it is metallic. The metallic barely shows, so my mistakes are probably less obvious. (IH rims were galvanized). There is a little uneveness if you look close enough, but it likely looks much better than the rattle can stuff or brush on that most people use. Since that's the only metallic I have used, I was not aware that it couldn't be easily repaired.

If you are using a base coat/clear coat system it's a piece of cake.Just don't sand the base coat before you clear it! If you are using a non-cleared enamel or acrylic enamel or a single stage anything, unless you have a lot of experience painting I would not advise it. It's a hard learn for anyone. Most people end up with a big mess the first few times..including me! It's even hard to teach as there a lot of things that need to go just right and be timed just right. I won't even do a single stage metalic if I can avoid it!
