NAA paint job?

My Jubilee's in good shape and pretty much stock except for the Zenith carb I put on and the spin on oil filter adapter. I was thinking of painting it when I rebuilt the steering but didn't have the time then. But now I'm at the point where the only thing left to do is paint. Probably replace the wiring while I have it tore apart.

Hoods in good shape. Fenders are rotten in a few places, enough so I figured I order some new ones. I notice you can order them with the raised letters or plain. Plain's cheaper. Any thoughts?

I don't own a sprayer and noticed there's a bunch of different kinds... gravity feed, can underneath, etc. What do you use?

As far as prep I figured I'd power wash it, sandblast, wipe down with spirits, prime, bondo some dings, sand and seal it, sand, paint a few coats. I ordered a gallon of gray and red online that's supposed to be the original colors also a set of emblems. Figured that should be enough.

The can says to thin with TP47 (I'm not looking at the can right now so I might have that wrong). What do you use?

The motor's making me think though. Since it gets hot I question whether the paint I bought will stand up. I can buy high temp enamel in Ford red from the local parts store but I don't know if that red matches the red tractor paint. The guy at the parts store said most people don't prime a motor when using the hi temp paint.

If anyone has a link to some good online instructions I'd appreciate that.

Thanks,
Mike

CNKS gave yuo great info.

Also.. body prep will make more difference than materials or tools.. That is, figuratively speaking.. 1000$ worth of body prep, and then a 20$ spray gun and 80$ worth of paint and chemicals will give you a 1001$ 'looking' paint job. Whereas 100$ worth of body work, and a 300$ gun, and 200$ worth of paint supplies will give you a 302$ looking paint job.

I have an el-cheapo chinese gun that was 14$ marked down to 9$... have a cheapo regulator/filter that was 20$.. and I use cheaper TSC paint.. 8$ quarts / 25$ gallons.. etc... And I put weeks worth of time into sanding and body finish.. and i get great paint jobs. I've seen similar tractors painted with high dollar automotive paints, and spendy guns.. and looked bad due to imperfections showing thru the paint... think of paint like a magnifying glass... any imperfection will have attention drawn to it..

There are 14 pages of answers to your questions on this forum. Read them first, then ask specific questions. Pay no attention to the guy at the parts store. Prime everything. You do not need high temp paint except on the mainfold, and it came from the factory with the same paint as the rest of the tractor, and was allowed to burn off, or else it was unpainted. Don't sandblast the chassis, or engine, you will get sand in places you think are impossible.

Question about sandblasting. What alternatives do you have if you don't recomend sandblasting? Can you not protect areas you don't want to get sand?

Alternatives are a combination of oven cleaner, chemical stripper, pressure washing, and a wire brush on an angle grinder or drill. Some people put duct tape, etc over bearings and openings where they don't want sand, good luck -- May work, may not, I have no intention of trying it. That's all I know about it. I only sandblast parts that are removed from the tractor.

I should have said prime everything, except the manifold IF you use high temp paint on the manifold only. I do not know if there is such a thing as high temp primer, as I use the same paint on the manifold as the rest of the tractor, and just let it burn off. If you use ordinary primer under high temp paint, I imagine it will burn and take the paint with it.
