What causes spray guns to sputter? They worked fine when new. I've completely disassembled and cleaned them. Nothing looks worn. They're Harbor Frieght (Yeah, I know but they're all I can afford and like I said they worked just fine when new).

I guess I would have to know whether it is a siphon feed or gravity feed or pressure feed gun I don't see that in your post and it does make a difference as they all spit for different reasons. A siphon gun will do it if it is sucking air intermitently instead of paint..tighten fluid nozzle.I don't know if yours has a gasket,0-ring or just a taper fit? If it is water, any gun will spit. It should be pretty obvious if it is water as it should lay out in little droplets dispersed all over your paint surface. Learn your spray gun and I can't stress enough, especially for novices, spray a test panel and make all adjustments BEFORE you spray the tractor you just put all that prep work into.It just ain't no fun re-doing these things. Good luck.

It's siphon feed and there is no water. I'm using a separator and no droplets show up in the paint. Everything is perfectly clean. I'll check for air leaks. Thanks, John

I'd have to go with moisture or that the gun wasn't cleaned when last used 9 properly ).

I've had the same harbor freight gun for 5 years now.. it cost me a whopping 9.99$.. I've painted a whole lot of tractors with it... Water is the only time I've ever had it spray bad. In addition to the drainable filter onmy regulator, I now run a disposable filter right at the gun.. carquest sells them as a 2-pack for 4$.. worth it.

When done painting, i wipe as much excess paint out of the bowl, then add MS , reinstall can.. shake, pull apart and wipe again. pour out dirty mix. Then add naptha.. reinstall can, shake, and then spray that mix out to clean the nozzle. Then I go back in and wipe it out.. add more naptha and spray again till no pigment shows up on a white cloth.. use that cloth to wipe outside of gun, then take another clean cloth and wipe can out again. Can and pickup tube are clean like when purchased.. and that's the only way to put it away. Suure you use about a pint of MS and Naptha.. but.. there is no way around it...

If yours is a gravity feed, you can "perk" the gun to clean it. Turn the air down to 5 or 10 psi, loosen the air cap almost all the way, pull the trigger. If the cap is loose enough the paint/cleaner will gurgle backwards into the cup. Will also shoot out the top of the cup if the pressure is too high. Good for breaking loose anything that is stuck in the gun, you can also tell when the gun is clean because the backflow will be clean. You can finish cleaning by tightening the cap. I usually do clean it by alternating the tight and loose cap.

I never did like the gravity feed guns.. I always felt like I wasn't working hard enough to get viscosity as 'close' as when I use a syphon gun..

Check the packing nut around the fluid control needle. If it is worn, the gun will intermittently suck air in and sputter. Simply tightening it will stop it.

Also, where that packing nut is, where the fluid needle goes into it, behind the nozzle area, apply one (1) drop of motor oil on the needle, and work it back and forth a bunch of times! That packing nut gets dry, and the oil won't get into the paint! This from an ancient, well experienced auto painter!

Hi John,

See pages 8 and 9 of this pdf file. It's by DeVilbiss but the information is pretty generic in nature and probably is applicable to your gun also.

I had the same problem. My guns are all different brands, I even have a binks. The only thing I have been able to pin it down to is... moisture in the air supply. I hope this helps.
