I have noticed on several 20 series John Deeres and some of the 400 series IH that a primer was used at the factory.

I have noticed that hardly any of the older tractors had a primer on them.

I have painted several main bodys of tractors without using primer and they are holding up fine.

QUESTION! Why did some of the manufactures use primer and others didn't?

Thanks for any information you guys want to share.

I'm sure you have heard of and/or used "cleaner-wax" to wax your car. Most people have. Well it is niether a good cleaner or a good wax,but a comprimise that markets good because it claims to do 2 things at once.Rustoleum or any of it's namesakes would be the paint world's equivilant of a cleaner-wax.These will all produce "acceptable" results in some cases under ideal conditions.Any paint will coat and seal metal. Once the seal is even minutely scratched or broken, the weather will undermine the film and it will flake off in sheets because paint doesn't have any corrosion resistance.Add paint and primer together(rustoleum) and you have niether a good paint or a good primer. You prime with a good primer ,and then paint with a good paint. You will get better results and it will last a lot longer and hold up to a lot more of the elements.I'm sure others can add more but that's my shortened"in a nut shell" version.

Just guessing here.. but perhaps because painting cast vs painting sheet metal.. etc.

I always prime mine.. cast or sheetmetal.. etc... looks nicer to me..
