I am a complete novice at spray painting. I have some old Case tractors and a Cub that are looking pretty rough. They all still run and are mechanically good. I use them all on our farm but would like them to look better. I don't want to do a show or parade quality restoration, just something to shine them up and make them look better. Do you have any advice as to books or internet sites that would give me some starting information. I need to know about cleaning, preping, priming, type of paints to use etc. Even terms that some of you experts take as common knowledge will probably have to be explained to this old dog.

Thanks,

Phil

There is a difference between "refurbish" and "restore". That's something Pat Browning has shown. It is amazing what a good pressure washer or steam cleaner will do with some degreaser and a wire brush. If you have good air and an inexpensive spray gun get some good paint from your napa auto parts dealer and it will look good. A lot of this depends on what you consider looking good. Are there dents and dings in the sheet metal? Do you want that kind of stuff corrected? I think a bad paint job is worse than no paint job. If someone has something for sale and it has fresh paint that is not the best and paint on the tires and other stuff that shouldn't have paint on it I steer clear because I wonder what they are hiding. If you don't know a lot about body work now would be a good opportunity to do a job and learn some techinques with dents or painting etc. just some thoughts.....

I have found that using those sponge brushes that are sold at various stores, do a very nice job of painting things, and there is no clean up after--just toss the brush in the trash! I painted my old Ford Ranger Rat/ truck, and it looks quite nice! If you can get the tractor or whatever steam cleaned, it will go a long way to making it look better and better for the painting part. Or, you can remove the grease with oven cleaner, for heavy grease, or a final wash product, Pre-Kleano, sold at auto body shop suppliers, or even mineral spirits will do it. Whatever, do not use gasoline to clean it! It will definitely screw up the final paint job! If all you want is to make it look better, don't invest in expensive equipment or paint. I have used Rust-oleum on stuff and it looks alright! And, they produce a lot of colors! Where in W. Pa. do you live? I'm there too! E me, if you're near Pittspurgh!
