I'm restoring a late model "A" John Deere and want to use a better primer than the "conventional" stuff I've used in the past. I'm painting only the carcass of the tractor, since a professional body guy is painting the sheet metal. His finish coat will be JD paint and hardener, and also mine when I do the remainder of the tractor. It has been wire brushed and sanded and will be power washed and wiped down a couple of times with grease/wax remover. You guys, please tell me what to do next. Thanks for the help.

Epoxy primer from a major manufacturer. This will provide the best adhesion to the bare metal, and the best adhesion of the topcoat to the primer. These primers usually have a "window" of 3-7 days, depending on what you use before they have to be topcoated. Otherwise they need to be scuffed and reapplied. Also, you need to use the same paint as the bodyman uses on the sheet metal or the colors likely won't match. IF you use hardener you MUST use a supplied air system. To be intentionally blunt, I don't care what your bodyman says about that!

I should clarify -- The hardeners for most if not all epoxy primers do not contain isocyanates and can be applied wearing only a charcoal mask. Check the label/MSDS to make sure yours is non-iso.

I had always heard that primers are porous and cannot be relied on to protect from rust even in blind spots of cars, underhood, inside doors, etc. The topcoat is required for that and to protect from UV.

What about the epoxy primers? Sounds like tough stuff, does water still penetrate?

Epoxy primers are generally waterproof.
