This is a little off topic of painting tractors, but I'm helping my son build his first pinebox derby car for cubscouts. I wanted to use a good paint for wood that would really give a glossy appearance. I plan on wet sanding with 400 grit sandpaper like I do with sheet metal on the tractors between coats of paint. Is there a recommended type to go with acrylic enamel, rustoleum, etc? I'm also planning on using rattle cans

Any good implement enamel will result in a high gloss finish. The trick is to apply it just as wet and thick as possible without running the risk of runs and sags.

I always had my son do the design, sanding and painting of his derby cars. I worked on the wheels and axles.
It was a sleeper....Looked like crap, but ran FAST !
He won 1st place two years in a row !

A couple of kids had their cars disqualified because they looked so good. (Their dad's worked at FoMoCo.)
