Hello, I am in the process of restoring a 49 C and the issue of colors has come up. I have the book by Guy Fay and have noted what he said. However, the man who is helping me restore teh tractor was service manager and salesman for IH in the fifties and affirtimately says that he starter was black, the generator was black, the maneto was natural non painted as was the distributor cap, and the carburator was black. The rest was red. He says he unloaded many from the factory and sold them just like that in 1950 and later years for the IH letter tractors. To see the pictures of current restorations would indicate that the whole tractor was completely built and then "dipped" in red. Any thoughts? Thanks
Billy

Everything was red except the rims which were galvanized plus the silver canvas seat cover and the black steering wheel rim -- the magneto was likley added after painting with the cap and coil cover black, the metal part of the magneto looks best to me unpainted. Black starters and generators were either replacements or added after the tractor was sold, as the replacement generators and starters were black. Most C's would have been shipped with them, but the ones installed at the factory were red not black, the carb was also red. Your dealer friend has a foggy memory. I too have seen these tractors new, and the the items in question were red. The tractor wasn't dipped, it was spray painted by hand.

I agree. I'll believe photos over memories any day. Guy's book has lots of photos to back up what he says.
