I was thinking about the issues I would have setting up a paint booth in my garage, hard to get ventilation. Had a brainstorm (you may have another word for it). I have an old screen house (tent), maybe I can set it up and put some visqueen on the windward sides only. Run air hose from the garage and go at it.
I printed old topic on a jury rigged fresh air hood powered by a little shop vac. seems like a good plan.
Probably could also get one of those little open side party gazebos if the tent screen sides get to be a pain.
Question: How far does hardened paint travel before it dries enough to not stick to surfaces? I will probably within 20' or so of the new vinyl siding on my garage. Much as I love Allis Orange it probably would not look good on the garage.
Neighbors will think I have definitely gone off the deep end. Walking around the yard in a moon suit! I am sure someone will have pictures in the paper.

I guess the trick is no wind. I will be using a small HVLP gun anyway. My 6.6 CFM compressor could never run a full size rig. Figure I'm only a little step beyond the spray bomb at this stage. I'll give er a go.

Build a paint booth. in reply to mace56, 04-25-2006 15:47:23
There are bound to be plenty of articles about this on the internet. Use your visqueen or clear plastic on a 2x2 frame, a box fan or three to push air in one side through furnace filters and out through furnace filters on the other side to catch overspray. Ground everything to prevent an explosion, and use proper breathing apparatus for your lungs sake.

i think the issue is type of gun you are using, and how much wind. Cheaper the gun.. usually the more paint they throw to the sides. HVLP guns tend to throw less side spray as well.

I'v painted plenty of times in open air within 20' of a structure. Never had overspray problems except withing about the first 5 feet.

lots of variables though.. type of paint and hardner.. just how long you are painting and how much overspray you are producing.. etc. You can always hag a drop cloth on problem areas...
Better safe than sorry.

For what it's worth. My shop is 60 feet long, I have painted with spray cans at the far end of the shop, and had the paint drift to the other end and stick to the hood of my truck. I was able to get it off at the car wash so it wasn't stuck hard, but I doubt if your 20 feet will be far enough away. You will definately have an orange garage.
