Got a Ford 4000. Going to take the sheet metal off. What's the easiest way to paint the rest with taking off the minimal parts. Won't need to be parade or show quality, but more because the sheet metal will be painted and it'll look odd if there isn't a fresh coat on the cast. Thanks. Paul

What can't be sand blasted? I I do the back end staying away from the engine, am I in trouble? Paul

I just got my tractor back from the sand blaster last week. Take a look at my photos near the bottom that show how I had it blasted. I made a cover for the clutch housing, I duct taped everything that I didn"t want blasted.

I would never sand blast a complete tractor, the sand just plain goes everywhere, and it will get into places where you can't get it out. Just power wash it good, use a stiff wire brush and some kind of solvent where the crud didn't come off, and call it good. I've found the best way to paint the cast iron parts is with a brush, cast iron will soak up a lot of paint, and you can put the paint on pretty thick and heavy with a brush. Using a brush on cast iron will not leave brush marks.

So a paint gun is no good? Paul

It's however you want to do it. A paint gun works fine, takes 3 coats for the acrylic urethane I use. Only problem is the cast is irregular, making it easy to spray the same area twice, either by mistake or on purpose. If this happens you get what is called "dieback", that is the paint that got the second pass fades after a few days, maybe a couple of weeks. That is because paint is supposed to "flash" before adding another coat. Some people call that "skins over", that is, it is just beginning to dry and does not look quite as wet. Spray gun works best with everything off that will come off, otherwise a lot of stuff won't get covered. Much easier and faster, and more uniform with a spray gun, though, at least for me. The only thing I ever use a brush for is to touch up out of the way places that I missed.

I use single stage acrylic urethane, single stage meaning it is not base-coat clear coat. It uses an isocyanate containing hardener, meaning the usual charcoal mask is inadequate, and requires a supplied air system. For your purposes use an acrylic enamel without hardener from PPG, DuPont, or Sherwin Williams. Case New Holland sells both IH and New Holland tractors. The IH paint is an acrylic modified alkyd enamel made by Valspar. If the paint sold by your New Holland dealer is also acyrlic modified, it will probably be ok also. Stay away from alkyd enamels sold by tractor stores, and from CNH, if their alkyd enamel is not acrylic modified. Straight alkyd enamel is 30's style paint, is not very durable, and will fade. Unless you are going to do several tractors I am assuming you are not interested in paying $4-500 for supplied air, which MUST be used if you use hardener, which is the way to go if this is not a one-shot deal.

Purchased a 400 supplied air system. So, do those paints you recommend would be the same but with hardener?

You can use hardener with alkyd enamel and acrylic enamel. If you have supplied air, I would certainly recommend it. You MUST use hardener with urethanes. Economy acrylic urethane does not cost that much more than acrylic enamel (unless you use DuPont Centari or PPG Delstar acrylic enamels, which, so I have heard are excellent products) and is better paint. Expect to pay $100-$130/gallon. Add that cost to the primers. My recommendation is to buy paints with precise mixing instructions so that you don't have to experiment. PPG and DuPont have spec sheets with can't go wrong instructions. This will eliminate tractor store paints. What is a 400 supplied air system? I have not heard of it.

CNKs,

Sorry, I meant that's how much I paid for one, it was just under 400. They are on ebay there.

Looks like it should work -- the cool air feature would be nice in the summer for sandblasting. My Hobby Air gets pretty warm. No problem for painting as it doesn't get used more than 2 or 3 minutes at a time.

With all the talk I am confused as to whether the ebay system is a good one or not. One of my biggest complaints about sandblasting is getting blurred vision from condensation inside the hood. I would also paint with hardeners if I had a system. What conclusions have you of all the breathing systems?
