I'm getting a VAC Case ready to paint. I have been using a wire brush and sandpaper to get it ready. My question is after brushing and sanding what is the best way to get the dust off? Compressed air doesn't seem to get it all off. If I rinse it off with water won't I create more rust?

Sheet metal is simple, just wash it off, dry it, then use wax and grease remover to remove contamination. Cast is more complicated, as you have ground a lot of the crud on the surface into the cast. I wash several times with soap and water or a household product such as 409. I then use wax and grease remover until the rags are more or less clean. If you want cast squeaky clean, it will take a long time. You cannot get it as clean as sheet metal. If you can use a hot water pressure washer, you will save time. Hard to run one inside a building with no drain, though.

make sure the rust is off and blow with compressed air. A metal prep is good to protect, but get the primer on as soon as possible. If you don't have metal prep then wiping with a fast dry acrylic enamel reducer followed by a clean dry cloth keeps a clean surface.

If you get the rust off. and then wash it down.. dry it good ( compressed air helps ) then get it primed and sealed and painted.. you should be good to go.
