I am getting ready to re-paint an Old New Idea hay elevator and was considering using AGCO's Oliver Green and Allis-Chalmers Orange(Closest colors) Who makes it for them? Does it hold up better than TSC or Rustoleum? What about Car-Quest's implement enamel? I have considered using Rustoleum's STOP-RUST dark green but they don't make an Orange that I'm aware of. I would like to use PPG's Omni for durability, but I don't have a supplied-air system to avoid the isocynates. Any other brands or options? Thanks everytbody.

as my dad has run and set up paint factories for about 30 years, he will tell you that alkyd is alkyd as acrylic is acrylic no mater what the company the difference in the quality and price is all in the grind of the pigment. the smaller the grind the more durable it will be. they were making sherwin williams, dupont and some off brands all in the same factory.

Joel,

I have had pretty good luck with Agco/Oliver enamels. It goes on well and has stood up to regular use with no problems. We use our equipment (no shows or parades) and I just want it to look presentable without breaking the bank.

There is a couple of photos of our 1650 Oliver on our web site that was painted several years ago with Agco Meadow Green. It still looks good. The NH 270 baler has TSC paint on it, and even though it is a shade off, it is protected and still looks good. I wouldn't paint my car with TSC paint, but it works fine for our old tractors and equipment.

I hope this is helpful.

Good luck,
Scott

I just used Agco implement enamel on a white 271 disk (red) color and it turned out very nice. I also just used the Agco argent silver paint and it also turned out very nice. I did use hardner in both paints though. I think you have to watch out for how old the paint is though and how long it has been sitting on the shelf at the dealer. It can get a little scuzzy looking if it is too old. Make sure you strain it well. I also just used some of the car quest swift red urethane on my 4-150 cab interior. That stuff came out gorgeous. Just follow the directions and make sure the temp is about 75 degrees and low humidity and you will have a nice job. I did use a HVLP gun on that to keep the fumes to a minimum. That paint is made by Western and is very good quality and quite expensive but worth every penny. You can see the white 4-150 cab I did on the photos on the left side of this page. It all comes down to how thick your wallet is. I am sure the car quest implement enamel is about the same quality as your tsc stuff. It comes down to common sense. Show car-expensive paint. Implement that sees abuse-implement enamel. Tractor that sees abuse-implement enamel. Show tractor-expensive paint. Putting expensive paint on old implements is like putting a pig in a tuxedo and you will regret it five minutes after you use it the first time. Good luck, the rewards of your hard work will be your own self pride. Have fun.

I don't agree with your statement about implement enamel on tractors. Expensive paint needs to be taken care of and is actually more durable than implement paint, which has virtually no durability. It's not just how it looks when it goes on. It's how it looks 5-10-15 years down the road. Implement enamel will fade and chalk. If you are going to take the tractor out and scratch the $%$# out of it, then use cheap paint and repaint it every couple of years. Use "expensive" paint such as, at a minimum PPG Omni and DuPont Nason, take care of it, and it will last for years. Even the cheapest paints look good when first applied.

It's not the brand, it's the type of paint. Most, not all tractor dealer, tractor store and hardware store paint is alkyd (synthetic) enamel. That is 1930's technology. It worked in the 30's thru the 70's or so. It will still work, it just won't last very long unless you wax it once a month. If it happens to be an "acrylic modified" alkyd enamel, it will be better. If it is acrylic enamel it is ok. The best is urethane, it is not likely that. I don't know what Carquest implement enamel is. My Carquest dealer was a long time independent auto parts store/machine shop before becoming affiliated with Carquest, still sells name brand (quality) parts and DuPont paint.

PPG's Omni acrylic enamel and DuPont Nason, Sherwin Williams/Martin Senour acrylic enamels do not require hardener. Works better with hardener, but not essential.
