In the near future I am going to start prep. for a paint job on a tractor.Typical of any old one, grease, dirt, crud, flaking paint, etc. Have been wondering if I should pay somebody to,or maybe rent a steamjenny. I have a decent pressure washer and used it to cleanup my dads tractors last year. But I wasn't getting them ready for paint either, they would have needed more scraping and cleaning.Guess we've all seen those "quickie" paint jobs, with dirt, grease under the paint.I want a decent job, dosen't need to be 100% perfect, but still a good one.Any input guys?

Steamcleaning can't be beat, but lacking that, run hot water through your pressure washer- it is better than cold for getting thick grease off.

Castrol Super Clean does a respectable job at cleaning up grease and whatnot. Used it on the engine in my Nissan and the engine came out spotless after using the Super Clean and a garden hose (no pressure washer.)

Dave Have used both on tractors and steam / HP works the best. The one I use is live steam at 1000 psi. But be carefull of tight spots it all comes back in your face! I wear a sheild. HP alone is ok but will still have some film left on the rig. The other thing is to be carefull of rubber parts, tires, wires, etc it will shred them in a flash. Good luck Be safe! klj

I use mean green or simple green full strenth, then my preasure washer. It did a good job but, you may have to do the engine twice over for thick caked on grease.

I went to our local Rent-it-center,they used to have a hot-high pressure washer, but never had it replaced after it broke.I am going to check a couple of other sources.I still may scrape tractor down as good as possible, slather it up with degreaser-mean green,or similiar product, and proceed to get wet.

I've had good luck spraying tractors down with diesel fuel, keep the wet for a day or two then power wash it. You will still need a degreaser for the final wash but the diesel will soften up the thick stuff and is much cheaper than commercial degreasers.
