I have a JD 110 that I painted last year with TSC tractor paint and hardener. It was completely sand blasted and primed. Some parts were primed with sandible rustolium rattle cans and some with sandible tsc enamel.Color coat was JD green Alkyd enamel with hardener. Question: Can I use acrylic clear coat with out problems? If not, what type of clear can I use? Thanks

I think what you are asking is, can you apply acrylic over it without it eating or lifting the enamel.Since it was catylized and has had plenty of cure time, you shouldn't have any problems. I wouldn't sand it with sandpaper, use a fine scotchbrite pad wet. There are many "acrylics". The only one I wouldn't use over it is acrylic laquer. I'm sure that is not the one you had in mind.Watch out for the generic products. They don't have much of a shelf life and I've heard of some of them going bad on the shelf even before they have been bought by the user.Sure makes for a preventable mess just to save a few bucks. These are just my opinions but I dont think you will have a problem.Like CNKS said, though, why not save some time and money and just rub and polish it out each year?

You will get a better answer from someone else, but I am sitting here and will give an opinion -- subject to be corrected by someone who knows what they are talking about -- but I thought that clear was supposed to be used shortly after application of your other paint. You will have to sand the old finish for adhesion, don't know how that affects the clear. As to the acrylic over alkyd, people have done that, but I have had no experience with it. A 110 is a lawn tractor, right? My 10 year old 525 still has the original paint on it, faded and scratched from mowing under my pine trees, but it still polishes out pretty well. I believe you will find it easier to clean up and polish your alkyd than you will if you put acrylic clear over it. I have a heck of a time getting scratches out of clear coat. They can be compounded with a buffer and polished, that's more trouble than I want to go to. Although it fades, alkyd is easier to polish, as far as removing scratches. That's about the only thing I like about the older paints. Scratch the new stuff, and it's there forever, unless I get out my buffer.

Sorry I forgot to mention that It's a 1967, 110, 8hp Kohler. 1967 was the last year for the round fender 110's. I also have a 1965 and a 1966.

third party image

The tractor is a play tractor not really a mower anymore. I wanted it to have that wet look for the local show, also I thought that a clear would help protect the finish fron fading.
Thanks

I added a pic but it's been along time since I posted one.

Looks good to me without it. Alkyd enamel will polish out pretty good, and will last if kept inside -- that's your decision, though.
