I am getting ready to paint a VAC Case. Trying to decide what paint to use. I am thinking about trying Omni acrilic enamel. What do you guys think of that product?

Relatively low price, made by reputable company, middle of the line quality (with catylist), a little lower without.Buy enough so you have a little to practice with before painting your tractor. All paint sprays different.Good luck!

Does anyone have any experience with "Crossfire" paint from NAPA?

Hi Scott,

I don't have any personal experience with Crossfire. I believe it is an "economy" or "value" line of automotive paints from Martin Senour, carried by most NAPA stores. I also understand that Martin Senour products are basically re-branded Sherwin Williams products. I would expect that Crossfire paints are similar in quality and price to the economy lines of PPG (OMNI) and DuPont (NASON). Within any of the these lines of paints, there are different chemistries available - typically acrylic enamel and acrylic urethane in single stage and basecoat color plus clear(s) for two stage systems. I have found in the PPG economy OMNI line that the MTK acrylic urethane provides good value for the money spent, at least for tractor work or overalls. I would not use any of the economy line paints from any manufacturer if I were painting just a single panel on a car and expected a excellent color match to the adjacent OEM paint. You don't get something for nothing. If you are color-matching on a car, you want something in the premium lines ($$$) from any of the major automotive paint manufacturers. If you are comparing paints between manufacturers, be sure you compare similar products; e.g. same chemistry, same line. Do not compare the price of an economy line product from one manufacturer with that of a premium line product of another. Also do not compare the price of an economy acrylic enamel with that of an economy acrylic urethane, even from the same manufacturer. Whatever paints you are evaluating, get the specific technical data sheets from the manufacturer's web sites. The usage information will likely be different (even for similar paints) and the details may have an influence on your decision.

If you are going to paint several tractors, that is, if this is going to be your hobby, use acrylic urethane. For the required hardener, you have to have a $300-$500 supplied air system. If this scares you away, then use the acrylic enamel. The economy brands from PPG (Omni) DuPont, etc will cost you about $80/gallon, this does not include the necessary primers. Omni acrylic urethane with hardener is about $135/gallon. With acrylic enamel, what you see is what you get as it has to cure before you can repair any mistakes. Acrylic urethane can be repaired the next day. If you practice some first and get the hang of it, you can get a respectible gloss from acrylic enamel without hardener.
