I'm gong to try to paint my JD 1517 batwing this weekend/ I plan on a single coat of primer and paint. i need to hit the top of the deck, hitch, and underside of both wings.

Any idea on amount of paint? i like to intermix cans before starting the project.

thanks

You asked before, I didn't answer because I don't know -- but the closest I can come to your paint is Omni acrylic enamel, about 500 sq ft/gallon with "no loss". Assuming 65% efficiency with HVLP (good luck on that one) that's 325 sq ft/gallon. Assuming the 17 in your model number means 17 ft wide (I know nothing about that series of numbering), 17 x 5 deep? = 85 sq ft plus the depth, you can take it from there. Any use at all and the paint on the underside will disappear in no time at all. Since it is probably mostly rust, you might consider a rust converter on that part.

Thanks for the help. i was hoping yuo would reply. Your 'guess' is better than most counter people's informed answers.

Luckilly, the previous owner had been doing some half way decent mainteance on the mower. There is actually still plenty of paint on the underside.. though it deffinately need pressure cleaning, and then new primer and paint. Same with the top deck.

I know whe both have our own ways.. however I deffinately value your info and experience.. even if I do use the 'cheap paint.

Whatever works for you is fine with me -- hope you get good results -- the coverage should be on the can, perhaps not.

It probably is, however I've seen less than advertised coverage on a few paints, and was just trying to get a 'guestimate' in mind when i look the cans over. Might go pick some up today.

thanks again
