This weekend I got the leaf blow out to blow as much loose stuff off my batwing as possible. Used the pressure washer to clean the underside of the deck. Someone ( previous owner? ) had painted the underside of the deck black at some point. ( unit is a JD 1517 flexwing). Most of the paint was intact.. no real rust that I could see.

After drying in the hot fl sun for a couple hours I hit it with some rust control primer ( just in case ) and then went on to do other work. Next day I painted the underside JD green.. for the underside of a mower deck.. it looked pretty nice... (GRIN).

I need to pressure wash the topside of the deck again, and then prime and paint it. Looks like alberto will be standing in my way of the prime / paint issue.. I think I'll still pressure wash though.. get that over with.

If the rest of the unit looks as good as the underside, it will take years off the 'looks' of this old batwing.

Guess at some point I may have to replace those ratty tires.. ( but not before they go flat! )

I'll have to remember this trick... any time i need rain.. i just need to schedule a painting project!!

You are industries to paint the underneath side. I painted by batwing last year and i just did the top side. How did you get the underneath clean enough to paint. The underneath of my batwing is so caked in dirt and grass. I could even think of trying to paint it.

Well.. I'm trying to make it last. I don't anticipate having the money to buy those things very often (GRIN).

I pressure washed it.. pressure washed it, and pressure washed it... scraped some with a paint scraper.. and used a degreaser.. also pressure washed it some more.

I finally got it to a point that it was either bare metal.. or clean paint.. no oil Amazingly enough.. for a mower deck underside.. I got no paint flaws.. no runs.. no slumps.. no bugs.. no dust.. no water.. no fisheyes... and nobody will ever see it! I don't know whether the deck was painted from the factory.. but i suspect it was.. and I suspect it was painted again at some time in its life .. at least the underside anyway.. Which is good... I found almost -0- rust.. but wanted to keep it that way.

I even tried an etching rust control primer... The spray quality / reducing / coverage of it was way different than the regular primer I use.. I think I used a pint of it on test spraying!! I'll say one thing... it took paint good though...
