In the near future I plan on fixing up an old New Idea Transplanter. It is in good shape for sitting around so long but one thing I need to figure out is what to do with the water tank. I do not plan on useing the tank for water or anything other than just for show so it does not need to be water tight. I plan on having the whole thing sand blasted and then a primer sprayed on before I start the actual work on taking it apart.

The water tank has a seat, raised letters, and an outlet in the bottom.

You can see from the picture on the end of the barrel at the bottom theres about an half inch wide rusted out part thats maybe 8 inches long. There may be more that needs to come out to get back to some good metal.

My question is if this gap can be filled in with some kind of epoxy/fiberglass type material or will I have to take it to a metal shop and have them weld it.

I"d definitely cut out and weld in replacement sheetmetal. If you need it to hold water again, the interior can be sealed with a special lining compound. Talk to the local gas tank repair shop about that.
