I need to paint my redbelly tractor and there is a one year plus coat of alkyd enamel with hardener on it already. It was a light coat and missed a lot of spots so I want to repaint and NAPA has acrylic enamel that is locally available.

Will it adhere to the alkyd enamel if I use a hardener too? Or what do you recommend? thanks. tom

I scuffed some areas with 400 grit, washed off all areas with lacquer thinner and then went for it, and shot the NAPA acrylic enamel over the alkyd enamel. The results? Very Good.

No problems, adhering just fine. Flash time is a little slow because air temps were in the 50's and as of this morning it's still a little tacky and it got below freezing.

I think it will be ok. thank you for all your help. tom

i have several gallons of Hempalin Enamel. It says that it is an Alkyd enamel ready to use. Since it is says on the label 'ready to use' i do not plan to buy any thinner. My question is: What do i use to clean my sprayy gun with when finished????? If i need to thin the paint can i use regular rocket reducer like DuPont or Acme???

I would recommend you sand the tractor with 220 grit wet or dry paper. Get all you paints and primers ready. Mix up epoxy primer using a little bit of red tint to shade the gray primer until it looks sort of pink.

Spray the primer evenly to cover everything. Set the primer gun down and grab your paint gun and go for it. The epoxy primer will not react with the under layment and the top coats will stick prefectly to the still damp primer.

This is the simplest method for dealing with this situation.

I would suggest asking an automotive paint supplier. If the surface you want to paint is smooth and straight and you just want to paint over the existing color. I would recommend wet sanding the existing paint with 400 paper and shooting it with a SEALER.
The sealer is a clear coat that seals the surface from old previous paint reaction and bleed through. Also ask your auto paint store salesman about the sealer...they are suppose to be the experts..let your fingers do the walking in the YELLOW pages.....
