I am painting my '44 Farmall H with a synthetic enamel and hardner. The paint (IHC red) goes on really well and the color is brilliant and dries to a nice gloss. The paint is relatively inexpensive - about $45 per gallon. Does anyone have any experience with synthetic enamel and can tell me a little more about it? For example, will it hold up well or are there any tricks to it's upkeep? Any advice here will be greatly appreciated.

Hi there Slappy,

A synthetic enamel, also know as an Alkyd, is a common type of paint used on tractors, even as factory original equipment. Many of the industrial enamels are also of this type. It also used to be popular on automobiles in the 50's. For cars though, it has been replaced by acrylic enamels in the 60's and 70's and the urethanes of today.

It is a relatively inexpensive paint that can provide protection for a long period but has a reputation for premature fading over time, especially in the reds and yellows. The use of the hardener may help this somewhat though.

I've been using IH 2150 for years; keep it waxed
(wait at least 30 days from painting) and out of the sun as much as possible. I have a IH Super C
that I restored in '94 that looks like it was just painted..... .....but it stays indoors and out of the sun except for shows and joyrides. Overall, I continue to use the IH paint because the color is always right and so is the price. I have best results using the Ironguard primer from IH and the IH thinner. I wet sand the primer with 400 paper before I color coat and the shine is as
good as any acrylic with clear that I've ever seen
