Read 1st time painting advice, started by Tony, currently about 3/4 of the way down the page, then start asking your questions. It's a good idea to read all the posts on this forum. Do not use hardened paint unless you are willing to purchase a supplied air system. I remove grease etc with a combination of pressure washing and oven cleaner. When most of it is gone I completely disassemble the tractor and wire brush -- angle grinder and electric drill-- the remaining paint and rust on the cast. Any remaining paint is chemically stripped. It is then repeatedly washed with soap and water, household cleaner, etc, and the remaining residue removed with several applications of wax and grease remover until the rags come back mostly clean. After you pressure wash and wire brush, you will think the cast is clean. I promise you that it will still be extremely dirty. The only other way to get it clean is with a hot water pressure washer, or steam cleaner, which most people do not have. I do some sandblasting, but only on removed parts. Sheet metal is sanded.
