Some may of seen i had a problem with the profesional paint job on my tractor and i have to redo it myself. The tractor is a massey 44 standard. It is all assembled and painted 2 different shades of red. My plan was buying a cheap paint gun off ebay and paint from the massey dealer as ive experimented with their spray cans on smaller parts and really like the colors, plus it looked just as good with what i used in a spray can as the profesional paint job. My question is what do i do for prep, can i paint right over this paint the painter laid down a few months ago as long as i wash the dust off? I kinda figure i will leave everything that goes red assembled and paint it all in one shot. Then do the rims yellow in another. Then all the black stuff in another then just reasemble. Does anyone have any suggestions for using dealer bought paint? What will i need to add? What else will i need to know for my first time painting?

What B-maniac said. But, regardless, you cannot expect new paint to adhere to several month old paint. At a minimum it has to be sanded, you might get by with scotchbrite pads, I have never tried that. If you get as good a finish with spray cans as your professional did with a gun, your "professional" isn't one, or you are the world's best spray can painter.

Will need some more input. Why do you have to do it over yourself if you paid him to do it? What is the specific problemwith the paint job? Is it just that it is 2 dif. shades of red or other problems? Why is it 2 shades of red? Specifically, what type paint did he use on it? Hardener or not? Clear or not? Small parts you can do with spray bomb, large sheetmetal parts are another story all together! With this added info, maybe we can all help you out.

From reading his original post, he was disassembling the machine aprt by part and taking it over to the painter and getting it done piece meal. .. over months? time.

My guess is the painter had to break into a new quart or gallon of paint at some point, and had not intermixed the cans.. and thus got a different lot. ( I always intermix my cans.. )

To the original poster. i agree with these guys. i think I'd hit it with superfine, and then mask and let her rip. If your rattlecan job looks as good as what the painter did.. you can't hurt anything by hitting it with a cheapy gun. I would suggest that you practice on some scrap metal first.. like an old car hood.. etc.

And you don't need ebay to get a cheap gun. hit walmart and get a CH gun for ? 14$.. same with TSC.. ( figure both are chineses anyway). or just hit a chinese store and get one... etc.

I've apinted lots of tractors with a chinese gun. I wouldn't paint a porsche with it.. but a farm implement is fine.
