I'm getting close to done on my 41 Farmall B restoration. I'd like to add a bit of contrast to the tractor without too much emphasis. For example, on the original bolt head's for the rear wheels. What do you guys use. I don't really want to use aluminum or silver colored paint. Could I wire wheel them down to bare metal and clear coat them? What do you do with the scuffing that will occur when you torque them down? Any advice?
Thanks
DJL

Just wanted to give all an update. I found a plater locally. I took him the bolts and had them re-zinced. I'm very happy with the results. Cost was about $50 for 12 bolts.

Clear coated bare steel does not hold up well.

If you really want to do a nice job of it, bead blast your hardware and send it to the link in this post. www.detailplating.com They can silver zinc or yellow/gold zinc plate the parts as you like. Gold zinc was not available in general until about 1963. Most parts back then were Silver Cadmium. Zinc is shinier than Cad. Cad often was a little duller sometimes even white-ish. It"s difficult to find an actual cad plater anymore. It"s environmentally harsh process and thus more costly to do with EPA regs. Zinc is a geat alternative. It may even be better in corrosion protection if you take care of it. Typical hardware store is silver zinc with a clear chromate finish or Yellow/gold zinc with clear chromate finish. There is no gold cad in hardware stores. I also would advise against replacing original hardware with hardware store hardware. It"s usually softer grade 2, unless otherwise noted. What"s on the tractor is usually automotive grade 5 or better. Grade 8 is not always best either. It"s easier to cross thread with grade 8. Lastly, I send all my hardware to detail plating for my classic cars and my tractors. I sometimes even zinc plate parts that will get epoxy primed and painted. It"s extra corrosion protection.

I love the contrast of a gold cadnium plated bolt it really sets off a good paint job. I usually go to my local hardware stors and get grade 8 hardware for the gold cad. look.

Not original, but I usually replace wheel/rim bolts with cadmium plated ones. Otherwise touch them up with a brush.
