Checked pricing for Urethane, and found PPG Concept will cost me $350 for paint, catalyst, and reducer. I can get the Valspar Urethane for $165, includes reducer and catalyst. Question: Is the Valspar garbage reletive to the PPG? Don"t want to spend the money, but don"t want to waste it either.

I am just finishing my first tractor resto. I come from doing classic show car resto"s. I use PPG Concept (DCC) on many parts on restorations (base clear on the outer sheetmetal). I can"t bring myself to use anything else. When you do so much work preparing parts, Removing rust, metal prepping, doing bodywork, etc, why skimp out on the final coat. If it fades in 5 years or starts breaking down in some way, all that work is wasted. The cost difference is only $150? I"ll stick with the best product. What"s even more important for a long lasting finish is the prepwork and sealing the metal with a good Epoxy primer like PPG DPLF. Recently I purchased a gallon of Vermillion Red (Red is always the most expensive) DCC for $301.

I have used PPG OMNI on 4 tractors over the lact 4 years and love it. If you want the "wet" look and something that is easy to spray, you can't go wrong.

I'm not going to down Valspar either, but no one sells it here, I have no assurance that I can match the color, would have to learn a new system that is probably no better than the one I have now, etc, etc. One gallon PPG Omni MTK in IH 71310 red (red is expensive) one gal. reducer and one qt. hardener cost me $157.04 earlier this year. I am probably going to try some Concept sometime.

Hi Stan,

I'm not going to dump on Valspar paint because I have never used any. I'll just say that what I have seen of their safety documentation (MSDS) leaves me quite unimpressed. I suspect however, that you may be comparing apples and oranges judging from the costs you indicate, even though they are both urethanes. Most major automotive paint manufacturer's, including Valspar, have at least two basic lines of paints; a premium line and an economy or "value" line. The PPG Concept is a premium acrylic urethane in PPGs Deltron lineup and is expensive. That's what you would want if you were repairing a car and wanted the best color match, and/or was looking to save time by using a minimum of coats. It may be (I'm not sure) that the Valspar urethane you mention is in their economy line. You'd have to provide a little more information to determine that. Have you looked into PPG's OMNI line? That is PPG's economy line of automotive paints. The acrylic urethane in OMNI is called MTK. The color would carry the same number as the Concept. For example if your color was DCC60080 (Concept), the same color in OMNI would be MTK60080. You probably would find the cost of the MTK to be between 1/3 and 1/2 the cost of the Concept for the same color. I've found the MTK to be a very good value for the money. It is not as high in solids as the Concept so you might have to apply 3 coats instead of 2. And if you were matching an existing car paint, the match would not be as good as the Concept. Neither of these aspects are important to me for tractor painting and they may not be to you either. In any event, check out the price for OMNI MTK at your PPG jobber, assuming he carries it.

I live in a small town that only has a Napa dealer. How does Martin Senour compare?

I have no personal experience with Martin Senour since I have never used any of their products. They do have both economy and premium lines like most manufacturers. They have a very good website that has all the tecnical data sheets and MSDSs for their paints. Unlike most others, their site also provides public access to an OEM (including many tractor brands) search for color codes as well as competitor cross reference code listings. The paint troubleshooting guide on their site is second to none. It's the best I have seen and beats similar ones from PPG and DuPont hands down. You might wish to save it to your hard drive and avoid repeated downloads of a fairly large pdf file. That's what I did. They seem to be doing a decent business in my area, having shared the market with nearby DuPont and PPG jobbers for many years. They are probably competitive in both price and quality with the same chemistries in the same lines as the other two. I don't know about your local NAPA store, but with mine the paint part of the business appears to be incidental to the auto parts business and they don't have a dedicated paint counterperson. With that in mind, I wouldn't put a lot of blind faith in whatever you are told by the sales personnel. With the good infomation available at the website, you can do your own research on the technical details and likely become more knowledgeable than the salesperson. You should do that anyway because I have found that even with a dedicated paint person, correct information is not always provided.

Rod

Should be equivalent to PPG/DuPont, be sure to read the spec sheets before purchase so you will know what you are getting and how to use it.

Thanks a bunch! I have had a hiatus in my painting career as I knew a lot about it in the early and mid 70's when Imron first came out. Then I went to college and another career (dentist) and have only recently in the last year or so gotten a shop to enjoy my hobby again. A lot has happened in the mean time!

Thanks Rod! I didn"t understand the difference between the two. I think I"ll check on the OMNI, sounds like it is what I really need. Thanks again. ...Stan
