HI, Repainting a JD R and need to blast and paint the rims/hubs. Anyone have any tricks on keeping the paint off of the tires, except for the obvious task of masking them completely off? I have made the mistake once of getting paint on a tractor tire..... and never again!!!

I'd appreciate any tricks you may have!

Thanks

I have used clear plastic sheeting. I cut a piece to cover the entire rim & tire, then mark diameter of rim. Cut hole in sheeting about 1/2 - 1 inch inside mark. I then stretch plastic and work between rim and tire.

This works better if you can break the tire beads loose from the rim (without removing tire). Hope this helps, Tim

Bob, I have just the trick for you for doing this exact thing. I use a piece of rolled up roof flashing, usually the nice white or brown painted stuff. It is usually about 18 inches or so wide and is sold in just about any length you need, like 25 or 50 foot rolls. You can lay the tire down on the ground and unroll the flashing around the bead and fit it tightly in a circle around the wheel rim. Overlap it about 6-12 inches and use masking tape to hold it together where it will fit the rim perfectly and protect the tire. It works really slick and is fast to adjust it for different sized tires. It makes a perfect circle around the tire. It will be a little flimsy though so you have to handle it with care when you are flipping the tires around. It works even better on the small front tires too. Good luck, it sure works for me. If you do get any overspray, get to it quickly with the laquer thinner and it will clean off pretty good.

Some people mask them off, some break the bead loose from the rim, mask underneath and reinflate, some people use grease on the tire, or some other substance paint won't stick to. The best thing to do is to remove the tires, and blast and paint inside and out. Then they will last forever. Not that hard to do.
