I started painting a tractor and was delayed for about 6 months. I had sprayed the top coat which a single stage mtk urethane. After I had sprayed it I got to looking at it and it needed wet sanded so I did that and then I started to have some other commitments that needed tended to and never got around to the tractor. This is all the cast chassis so it doesn't have to be real good. My question is can I wet sand again and spray over it or do I need to do something else? My other question pertains to a hole in the hood that someone enlarged so they could take the hood off without taking the fuel cap off. The hole is about 2-1/2 inches in diameter and I would like the groomet to cover this. any ideas

To fix that hole correctly will be a couple hour job if not a little more. Without seeing it, it sounds like you"ll need to make a repair piece of metal to bring it back to how it originally was. The best way to do this I"ve found is by TIG welding. You can butt weld the repair seciton in using a TIG welding with a small Tungsten - like .040 with some .031 mig filler wire. TIG keeps heat more localized and concentrated and doesn"t dump a lot of wasted heat. This allows you to control the heat and minimize warpage. TIG welds are also more malleable, so you can hammer them, unlike MIG welds. After you weld in the repair section and do some minimal dressup with a 40 grit sanding disc, you can then use Hammer and dolly technique to get the area very close to final position. Then metal prep and do some filler work to get it dead straight and your in business. Most people don"t have a Tig, so it would be good if you could find a metal finisher who is good at this kind of work. Sure it will cost some money, but good sheetmetal isn"t cheap anymore either.

All you need to do is scuff with a scotchbrite pad, unless you see bare metal. If that is the case scuff it, use MP 170 epoxy and topcoat. My tractor chassis has been sitting about that long, and I'm going to do the same thing. I don't know anything about the hole, someone else will. I also don't understand a person too lazy to remove the fuel cap.
