OT-clear over gel-coat?

Slightly non-tractor related... but in addition to my tractor project, I have a Goldwing with the clear coat bubbling up in places on the plastic parts. I'd rather not completely strip and color coat mostly because I want to keep the matching original stripping (tape) that is all over the bike, but also because it is just the trunk lids that are affected. The base coat (black) is gel-coat, not paint. I can get the bad clear off by light sanding or scotchbrite.

So... What would "you" recommend for the clear? One of my concerns is entrapped air in the scuffs without total "wetting". Do you need to thin it more to prevent this?...

Any and all comments are appreciated.

Jim (and I have supplied air if necessary)

I have done this on Harleys. The black is usually gel coat-all other colors are paint. No problem except that often the rest of the bike looks bad compared to the fresh finish. If this is a problem color sand and compound back to a matching sheen.
On these projects I have gotten better results with "spot repair" type clears than "all over" types. Your paint supplier can answer most questions unless it is time to change suppliers.

Painting ,in itself,is for the most part one big experiment and what you are asking/attempting is no different. I've done a lot of "experimenting" in my 35 yrs.in paint and body but I can't say as I have ever done exactly what you are asking about. That being said,I would not be afraid to put catylized urethane clear over sanded or scotchbrited gel-coat. The top layer of gel-coat is basically a clear resin. If you use any of the name brand or economy versions of same and follow the instructions, you won't have any air trapping problems. When you spray clear, use as little air pressure as needed to properly atomize the clear. You are not trying to break up the flake or a pigment so it takes less air.Good Luck, like I say,it's an experiment so I doubt anyone on here is going to be able to give you a yes or no because probably no one has done exactly what you are asking. There's no book on this kind of stuff, even for us,you just do it and learn.
