I am looking at buying an air compressor to run a blast cabinet and for general shop use. It will be a 7.5 HP, 2 stage, 240V single phase unit. I have looked at Champion and Quincy and both of them seem well built and probably long lasting. Any opinions of one vs. the other?

Hey GPWT, I have an IR compressor similar to the one you're considering. I have used it with a siphon gun (similar to ones used in most blast cabinets) and never ran out of air. In one project, I blasted almost continuously (except when refilling sand) for about 4 hours and never had to wait. You'll never regret buying quality! HTH
Regards, D.L.

Quincy. However, you need to look at cfm, not hp, as hp is usually exaggerated, i.e. stated as "peak" hp. Those compressors may put out as much as 24 cfm at 100 psi, possibly as little as 15-17. Even the 24 is marginal, if you have a lot to sandblast, but it is useable, just don't be in a hurry to get done. Check to see if they have 100% duty cycles (means it can run continually without excessive wear, at least that is my interpretation). I have a 24 cfm one (not either brand) that does not. However, my sandblaster is small enough that it can rest between fillups. The Quincy likely has 100%, Champion may not. The Quincy probably has real valves in the pump, the Champion probably has reed valves, ok but not as durable.

CNKS, thanks for the feedback. Both compressors have continuous 7.5 HP motors, both put out about 24 SCFM at 125 PSIG, both have similar pump speeds and displacements, the Champion (at least the one that I am looking at) has disc valves, I am not sure if the Quincy has disc or reed valves. I am sure both have similar duty cycles.
I will be using this with a blast cabinet so it will not be used to blast large items like wheels, transmission housings, final drives, etc. Those things can be done better by someone with a large compressor and blasting set-up.

You will be fine with either of those units and a blast cabinet -- match the nozzles to your compressor, though. I believe Quincy is honest with the HP, not familiar with Champion, if it says continuous you're ok.
