Could someone please tell me which paint gun I should buy. Ill be painting tractors and equipment parts. I might use it 2 times a month or so. I see the cup guns and the HLVP for around the same price. I dont need anything fancy, just a decent spray gun. Which one is better to use for my application, engine blocks, fenders, wheels, etc... The HLVP looks like it would be very top heavy and hard to use. Any help would be great.

Thanks, Todd

actually there are "cup" hvlp guns on the market, there are some on the autobody.com site. I have painted with an HVLP (self contained blower system) and I own a 975 Sharpe with a no drip cup, (I can paint anything with it, cars, tractors, etc) you can turn it all around and have NO paint spill. If I were to buy one today it would be HVLP, if I had a good paint booth I would buy a regular pressure syphon gun. Over spay on the HVLP is almost none which is really nice for painting inside and around nice tools and stuff. Take this word of advise if you take any: Don't buy a cheap gun, pay more and your paint job will show it, you will hate a cheap gun, ecspecially when it squirts paint over your smooth finish you are applying and has an uneven spray pattern.

I have been using a regular Binks gun. (about $275 gun). Just got a Craftsman HVLP gravity gun which ran Santa about 150.00. Been using it and really like it. Less overspray floating around in the shop and with the plastic bags, I like the fact that you can tip in upside down and it works just as well with no mess. Cleanup is less than 5 minutes with the bags. I took forever cleaning my Binks so it stayed in really clean. Just sprayed a Camaro metallic blue fender with the Craftsman. Came out good. Have not found the shortfalls yet of the HVLP gun only the positives.

If you are wanting a cheap gun I would choose a cup gun, the HVLP guns are realitivly new so to get a "good" one you just about have to buy a brand name gun which will start out at about $150 and can easily go above $500 whereas a $50 cup gun will be a pretty good gun. After you use a HVLP gun for a few minutes they are just as easy to use as a cup gun. Being able to use all the paint in the HVLP gun may be their biggest advantage if you paint alot of small things.

Well, I painted cars for a living for 45 years. The shops had binks and devilbiss guns/ cup types, that cost anywhere from $250 on up! Later on, I tried one of those cheap spray guns, the cup type. It was a direct copy of a Binks! Binks parts fit it! Let me tell you--it sprayed just as good as the $300 guns! The last 15 years of my body shop employment, I used nothing but those el cheapo Binks copies, and they did a fine job! And I was doing base coat/ clear coat finishing, to boot! My paint rep couldn't understand how I got such good results with them---I told him experience is the secret! Rusty Jones

Could you give me the name of one of those cheapie guns that you were so happy with? I sure like the idea of being able to plug in Devilbis parts if I have trouble finding the cheapie parts!

Many thanks for your input!

Jake
