I was forced into repairing rusted wheels on my 860. It has power adjust wheels but not the style with the ribs, it has four slotted plates that the center hub spins in. I have a fried trying to weld repair them now and as soon as he's done, I need to paint them. I've seen some wheels painted silver and hubs gray and some all gray. What's the consensus on the original colors and if silver, what color code is that?

Thanks for the help,

Tony in IN

Tony,
We painted the wheels on my dad's Ford 961. It has the same type wheels you have. They turned out looking pretty good.

Brad,
Do you have the finished pictures of your Ford 960? From what I saw on your web site you had started painting the pieces but not the main tractor. Any updates?

My father tells me that the outside rims were originally plated silver (cad probably). Today you see most all of them painted Silver as someone has since painted them. I intend to paint mine as well. I have to because all f the little pits need to be filled and sanded smooth first and the only practical way to do this is by bodyworking and painting. A chrome plater could solder and copper all of the pits and then zinc plate the rims, but the amount of money that would cost would probably be astronomical. This leaves people with the bodywork and paint option. The gray for your tractor is the same as my 55 960. The PPG DCC paint (Acrylic Urethane)formula for that color is listed on one of the pics on my 960 resto page -see link below. I also have the Martin-Seynour (Napa) paint color number at my shop. I used the Napa paint to get the color mixed in the PPG DCC (a high quality paint that I use on classic car restorations).
