I have a rusty Oliver plow I want to paint. The best idea would be to have it sandblasted but I don't want to go to that much expence. Since it will not be a show item I was thinking of using a rust converter and then prime and paint. What do you guys think? I have used a rust converter on some old rusty wheels and it worked pretty well.

I have 3 400 gallon galvanized water tanks mounted on frames with axles (1 commercial and 2 homemade from truck frames) for my pastures that looked real bad. Figured anything was better than nothing. Found some paint that could be painted directly on rusty metal (probably the same as rustoleum)in an Aldi store for about 3 bucks a qt. For the sake of time, I used a pressure washer to prep the surface (got rid of dirt, dust, and flaked rust) and brushed it on straight from the can while I had the tanks at home for filling. I did one in April of last year and the other 2 in April/May of this year, they set outside 24/7 year round and one looks just as good as the other (all look good).... I used the same paint on the ends of the galvanized tanks just to see if it would hold up (so far so good). I've never used Rustoleum for that purpose, but I'm sure it works just as good...

Good luck

Rust converter would be fine. I am not sure, but I think that you can spray your top coat right over the converter.

When I painted my IH 3-14 Little Genius plow, I used rattle cans of Rustoleum rusty metal primer followed with IH red.
