Hey Guys,

Has anyone ever heard of or used a plastic-based materrial for sand-blasting instead of using sand? Supposedly, it is much safer, you can recycle and it is much more enviroment friendly.

Here is a link to the wed-site as noted below. One of its primary applications is paint removal and surface preparation.

Thanks,

A company once blasted some Harley crankcases for me with plastic.Sorta without my permission, however it left no grit in any holes and the aluminum shined fairly brightly without any removal of the casting at all.A different company once beadblasted some crankcases without my permission and it took me about forty hours with q-tips and pipe cleaners to clean the glass shot out of everything.Plastic is a good thing for castings.Aluminum anyway.

Plastic media blasting has been around for quite awhile now. It"s good for blasting airplanes and anything you need to be gentile on. It won"t remove rust! You need sand to do that. Soda blasting is another alternative. It"s probably the most environmentally friendly. It will remove some light rust.

Plastic would creat less heat.
Walnut shells are also used.

Jay,

The thought here is that the plastic is inert during the application, then can all be picked-up and sent for re-cyling.

When you sandblast the sand disintegrates and releases free silica -- floats around everywhere. The only "enviornment" it hurts is your lungs, whereas plastic is a contaminant. It won't degrade. I use supplied air so the silica is not a problem for me. But, I suppose the area outside my shop where I sandblast contains free silica, I imagine it mixes with the soil, grass, weeds, etc so that it is no longer a problem (cough, cough).

Plastic media blasting is especially suited for blasting steel and aluminum sheet metal without damaging or distorting it.
