A question here about what is called in the industry VM&P Naptha solvent for paint. What exactly is this stuff? Is it the same as regular naptha like the camp fuel stuff? Or maybe similar to lacquer thinner? Can you use the campers naptha or lacquer thinner as a solvent for regular acrylic enamel enamels? I find that you cannot buy the VM&P Naptha in small containers.

Tractor Supply usually has it in quarts and gallons. It's the recommended reducer for their BPS Valspar paints. I've also seen it at Lowes. GA Jim

Naptha is the thinners for rubberized paints like swimming pool paint. When I try to clean other paints off small brushes with it, it does not work.It is specific use thinner and the paint must match it.At 13 dollars a gallon be sure thats what you really need. Each paint you purchase; ask the supplier the recommended thinner to avoid incompatability problems.

I think tractor supply company carries it. It is the recommend thinner for the BPS paint they sell. It stinks to high heaven. Last time I look they had it in quarts. You might also try a corner hardware store for it.

"VM & P Naptha is a highly volitile mixture that acts as a fast drying paint thinner for oil based paints, enamel and varnish. Drys quickly, so is not recommended for cleaning brushes. VM&P stands for 'Varnish Makers and Painters'."

I know nothing about it -- use the thinner or reducer recommended by the paint manufacturer. I believe the acrylic enamels are more sensitive to errors in reducers etc, than the old alkyd enamel. And, you don't want to use lacquer thinner for acrylic enamel. Always best to follow the instructions.
