I'm thinking of buying an "original" tractor and preserving it in its current condition. What is a good product to use that will preserve what paint is remaining and prevent any further rusting?? Thanks in advance.

You will need to post a CLEAR photo of the subject in order to get a valid answer that isn't just a shot in the dark. the word "original condition" has a million meanings. There ARE ligitimate ways to do what you are asking, but we need more info to give you the RIGHT way. Please respond. ie how much rust, paint condition..naaa..just post a photo! The choices are : clean it meticulously, spray it with a catylized acrylic urethane clear, same but with a flatening agent so as to not shine any more than original, acrylic enamel clear with or without catylist and with or without flatening agent. Mind you, though, these are all secondary to storing it in a dry building, which you say is almost impossible. We need more info.

I dont know why you would want to do this, unless it is in good shape to begin with. It is unlikley the paint is original, probably been painted several times. Now you might have a very well kept tractor, we dont know until we see some pics =)

That's actually pretty easy. Store it in a heated, low humidity garage. Even an unheated shed will help. Don't throw a tarp over it - that just traps the condensation. If you live in an arid climate you're set.
As far as the tin goes - wax will give you a surprising amount of moisture and uv protection.

Sorry, but I can't do that. My machine shed, unfortunately, is located in a damp swale, and even with tile drainage around the perimeter, it remains rather damp. I feel I need some sort of chemical "assistance". Yor suggestions, however, are well taken.
