I bought a new steel entry door to replace a wood door. The door has grey primer on it and i guess it would need to be scuffed. I'am thinking i would brush the paint on because i don't want a perfectly smooth door (or do i) Hmmmm What kind/type paint should i use? I'am replacing the door because it gets afternoon sun and is cracked all over and faded.

I have 35+ years of house painting experience. I am a retired school teacher. I used to paint summers during my teaching years, and now do house painting part time during the good weather.
I would suggest that the gray primer does NOT need scuffing as it is a dull finish. I have the same type metal doors on my own house (Stanley)and I used a gloss acrylic latex over the primer. Certain colors (like blue and red) are prone to fading, especially since you state you have exposure to strong sun. If you chose a lighter pastel type color it will hold up much better to the sun (fading wise). The 100% acrylic latex is the way to go, in my opinion. And whether you want a flat, semi gloss or gloss finish is up to your personal preference. I've always thought the glossier finishes held up better to the weather.
As far a painting with a brush, if you are careful you can obtain a nice smooth finish using a brush. Just don't paint it when the sun is shining on it because the paint will skim over far too fast for you to keep up with it. Pick a cloudy day or wait until the sun is off the door. Work quickly and always work into what you just applied. I always do any inset panels first, then the horizontal parts and lastly the two verticals and edges, working top to bottom.
Hope this helps.
Carl
