Here's one for the paint experts;
We are campaigning for a sheriff candidate and have magnetic signs on our 96 Chryler Town & Country van.Light purple(lilac).
The mrs. noticed when she washed it one dat that the paint was dicolored.At first I thought it was dust,but it wasn't.
I then thought the clear coat had become hazy,but won't rub out.It's not the whole area where the sign was,but spotty-kina blotchy.
Did the magnetism do something to the metalic base coat?What do you guys think?~brad

I don't like to attach anything to or even cover a painted surface. My guess is (when I guess I am wrong 99% of the time) is that you got condensation or trapped water under the sign that was unable to evaporate, thus damaging the paint. Perhaps it caused some transfer of whatever is on the underside of your sign to the paint. I would expect this to more easily occur on a repainted surface than on the factory paint. By 1996 most manufacturers had their acts together. Seems I have heard of the commonly used magnetic ribbons in support of our military causing problems, but I thought that was scratching. You may be able to rub it out, but you will probably need a rubbing compound type of product that is used by body shops to rub out new paint -- it may take an electric buffer, as many of those products require the heat generated by the pad to remove defects (along with the paint if you aren't careful).

CNKS;
Thanks for the reply.
The moisture theory sounds like the culprit.I can tell that the hood and fr bumper cover were re-done before,but everything else is original.
I've got a good buffer and some Maalco buffing compound,I'll try a spot.THANKS!!

An awful lot of "new" cars had post assy. line body and paint work done either at the factory or the dealership before being sold. This "second" painting cannot be baked like the original was.(the car is assembled now , won't take the heat) I can't believe that it would "steam" the paint,especially on the side of the car,if in fact it was factory baked paint. You say the front of the car had been painted,right? Most all of those colors had to be blended back into the next panel for color matching purposes,and when they do that,they then clear the complete panel that has the color blend. Therefore,if the front end was painted,there's a pretty good chance that both front doors were also blended and cleared. These signs will trap moisture and when hit by sun will "steam" the paint and discolor it. I don't believe it will buff out if that is the case. Good Luck.

Hey thanks for the info!
The doors in question are actually the rear side doors.The person I bought the van from is my aunt,and her son(my cuz) owns a good body shop,so he did the repair(nice job).Clear looks original at front doors and side doors.
Learned my lesson from those dern signs!!
Looks like the guy I'm campaigning for is gonna win,so not a totally lost cause.THANKS AGAIN!!

If that is a rotary buffer (not orbital), I assume you have used it before. If not, remember that you can burn paint. Keep the thing moving. Use a foam pad, not wool, foam will not burn through the paint as easily. If it is an orbital, you should be ok, but an orbital will not do the work that a rotary will. If it were mine, I would try a fairly aggressive compound (made for clear coat) designed for hand rubbing first. I have done a little buffing, but I am not an expert, by any means.

If I remember right, when I had bought magnetic signs for my one work truck the instructions said to remove them after getting the vehicle wet and dry behind them as the trapped moisture would discolor the paint.
