I know this is not tractor related but I've had such good luck on this board in the past I figured I'd try again. I want to paint my aluminum plane. I've been agonizing over what primer, and paint to use. I've done a ton of research on mosty the dupont web site. I know I need to etch the aluminum, either by a self etching primer or a seperate pre-etch. Then they want an epoxy primer then sometimes a sealer then the basecoat-topcoat. We were going to use imron because we've heard such good things about it. I've never painted with it before. But when I go to see what primers go with it I discover there are a bunch of different imron's? Each with different primers recommended. I'm just wondering what you guys would recommend and what you think would be the best for long term durability over aluminum. I have painted other cars and planes. I plan on buying a new HVLP gun also. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I think you should find out what you paint supplier has in stock. I started painting my tractors with Imron becuase I also heard very good things about it. Where I ran into trouble is when I went to paint the next tractor. My jobber couldn't do the color I needed in regular Imron. I was going to have to order a gal of imron5000 in and trust that the paint code color was the correct shade. btw this was in Allis orange and ended up starting me on a big search, lots of post here about that adventure. I ended up switching over to PPG's Concept line with thier DPLF primer as a Imron equvilent.

You might have to have approved paint for aircraft use. Endura is. Dave

Do they have Endura paint there? It's a plastic paint that's very durable but a liitle harder to apply. A friend of mine had his Cessna 172 painted with it. There might be something about it on the web. I never looked. Endura manufacturing. Dave

Just go to Endura. They make special paint and primer for aircraft. It's more durable than Imron. Hope this helps. Dave

HI, check the DuPont website and search for a jobber in your area, we have launched an Avaition last year that is just what your looking for. if you don't find a local jobber with the aviation line, use Metalok 250 CVP S, then Corlar 934S, then you top coat, Imron 6000 is base clear Imron 2000 is single stage, Imron 5000 is a 1 1/2 coat version of Imron 2000, these Imron's do pass the aviation industry standards which mostly revolve around UV protection

Another thing to look at in using Aviation paints vs Automotive paints on your aircraft,( I am an aircraft mechanic and painter) is the Aviation paints have different items to protect from. For example, Aviation gas, Aviation Jet fuel, Synthetic hydraulic fluids (especially the Phosphate Ester based ones, the most destructive of paint films on commercial a/c for instance) and on the bottom of your aircraft or nacelles, from exhaust gases that most cars do not have to contend with. So, your best bet is stick with your Aviation oriented paints for that perfect paint job for your aircraft. When I built my SCAMP before I lost my medical I used Imron and never regretted it..I did go to my Aircraft jobber to get what I needed and had no problems...
Paints have changed over the years, and the latest are the best I have seen. Technology can only improve what is good and they are looking better all the time. Good Luck
Tom
