I have a jd h and b and both rear rims have rust pitts, particularly in areas near the valv stem or the closest to the ground while they sat for a long time. The pits are not severe but enough to be unsightly if painted. What should I "fill" them with prior to painting to create a smooth surface?

Johnny,

A two-part polyester finishing putty similar to 3M's Flowable Finishing Putty that is used in conjunction with the other products you are using on the rest of the tractor should work well. It is said to be "flowable" and "self-leveling" but I would not characterize it as such. It's thinner and smoother than regular polyester body filler, and thinner than toothpaste, but it doesn't really flow into place like the term "flowable" implies. I'd say it slumps readily but doesn't flow well. It spreads easily though and that's the way I have used it - with a plastic or rubber spreader. I suppose it could be brushed also (as claimed) but I have not tried it that way. It's about $35 for a tube at the local NAPA store. Other manufacturers market similar products. See what is available where you buy your painting supplies.

After blasting the rims clean, first so the roughout filler work with a good spreadable filler like Evercoat Z-Grip or Clausen Z-Chrome. There are other decent fillers to, but these are what I use. Sand the roughout work with 80 grit on a foam sanding pad. I buy 3M gold 6inch Stickit disks. Now seal the rim in PPG DPLF Epoxy sealer primer. Then you can use a sprayable filler by Clausen called Rust Defender. Same material as the spreadable, but in a thinner sprayable form. It allows you to spray out filler in thinner, more even coats. This reduces the amount you have to sand off and thus wasted work. After several applications and sanding with 180 or 150 grit you should be to an even surface. Then apply urethane filler primer to fill the 150 scratches and sand with 320 grit. Now seal with a good Epoxy sealer like PPG DPLF. Then you"re ready for paint. Sure it"s a bunch of work, but your rims will look brand new.
