Hey Guys,

Sorry to double-dip here on the boards.

Just got my 1951 JD MT back from the painter [3-4 weeks ago] and for the most part, it really looks great. Just yesterday at the top and bowl joint [more of the top] of the carb, the paint has buckled/bubbled pretty extensively.

I rebuilt the carb about 1.5 yrs ago and used a brand new gasket in there and all of the new parts. i tightend all 4 screws down pretty well too. Whenever i finish running with the tractor, i always turn the gas off and now completely remove the battery.

The carb was completely stripped before being painted, but was accidently painted black first [like the starter, generator, etc], but then he painted it green. is there too much paint? Should this be completely stripped and repainted again...any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you have any questions, please post and i will answer back.

Thanks again,
tstex

If it was stipped with a chemical stripper, then the remnants of that stripper could have seeped into the gasket and now are reacting to your paint. Could also be that the black paint underneath the green is not compatable with it. Take it off, remove the bowl,strip/clean and prime and paint them seperately and then use new gasket and reassemble. Let paint cure a week at least. If you are not using catylized paint,it may always wrinkle from gas permeation out the gasket at some time.

Thanks B.

When i rebuilt the carb., i completely dis-assembled it, removed all soft seals and all brass parts/orifices, then bathed both halves separately in the carb-cleaner. It was thoroughly cleaned afterwards inside and out. Then put all new parts/gaskets/seals/etc.

The only two things this can be is either the blk paint underneath is not compatible as you said, or the four top screw were not as tight as they could be, and the gasket leaked...i will return the carb to the painter, have it stripped, then primed and painted with the proper catalyst's to insure it does not yield to gasoline issues.

Thanks again B, you and all the other guys on this board have a great and safe Thankgiving.

Regards,
tstex
