Some of the rivets on the doors of my dump truck with aluminum body are starting to get corrosion around them under the paint. how can I clean the aluminum to stop the corrosion and so that touch up paint will adhere?

Unfortuneately if you have two dissimilar metals like your aluminum body and steel rivet, it sets up an electrolytic reaction in the presense of moisture which causes corrosion. Dissimilar metals must be separated to disconnect the circuit. If you can replace with either stainless or rivets of the same material as the base metal, that is best. Galvanic corrosion is well known in plumbing when it comes to copper and cast iron. When the two are correctly connected, there is a special fitting used which prevents contact of the two metals and make the union with plastic piece separting the two. Many times plumbers find homes where this was not done and inevitalby the joint will corrode until it leaks. Anytime galvanic corrosion is occuring, it must be stopped. I suppose in a rivet situation you could use plastic washers on the head and clench side, but you still have to prevent the body of the rivet from touching the metal. Even if you came up with some kind of thin plastic sleeve that didn"t get damaged in installation, it"s still a risky proposition.

Brad-bb, thanks for your reply. I'm familiar with the electrolytic reaction between dissimilar metals. But I'm pretty sure that the rivets on my truck wich is a 2003 are Al and the corrosion is around just a few of of them. what I'm looking to do is to remove the corrosion so that touch up paint will adhere and seal the surface.

Although I don"t have a lot of specific experience with Aluminum, I do know that you need to halt the corrosion. You can spot blast or treat with a metal conditioner. PPG has metal conditioner for aluminum. After that though, one of the most important things though is to seal the metal with a good Epoxy sealer primer. That will seal out moisture and help prevent corrosion. This is the most important thing I can recommend. I like PPG DPLF Epoxy or Keystone brand. Keystone is a little cheaper if you can find a dealer.
