OT but still a paint question

I'm getting ready to paint the fender an older car that was damaged. I'll be doing this at home and I'm using Sherwin-Williams Ultra 7000, midnight pearl blue, a metallic paint as the base coat. I'm not sure how many coats of base I should apply or of clear coat. I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Hi,

You should get the technical data sheets (product data sheets) for each product. They will give you all the details on usage, including recommended number of coats. For Sherwin Williams automotive paints you can download the specific sheets for your exact products (both basecoat and clearcoat) here. Note that there are several different clears available so you'll have to select the correct one to match what you have.

Follow Rod's advise, firstly. One thing the tech.data sheets will not tell you is exactly HOW to spray the base coat. It's a hard thing to do because it goes against everything you have been taught about painting. DON'T spray the base on WET! DON'T try to make it shine , it isn't supposed to. If you put it on wet, the flake/pearl will "mottle" and you won't get the true affect like original. Spray the first coat so it just starts to shine but not like glass. The next two or three, just hold the gun back and dust them on until complete hiding. Base coat is very high solids so it will hide in 2 or 3 coats for pearls and 1 coat for solids. Above all, DON'T sand the base coat before clearing!! It will streak the flake/pearl and make a mess when cleared. If you get dirt in the base, scuff it out with 600 and then base it again only in those spots. Doesn't matter how dry the base looks , the clear will flow over it for glassy shine. These are just a couple things they won't tell you in the directions. For the rest , you need to read the individual tech sheets. If it needs to match the next panel, you will need to blend. That's a whole nother chapter though. Hopefully it's old enough that it isn't gonna matter anyway.Good luck.

Thanks guys. I'm glad I asked. I've painted with this stuff once before and noticed it went on flat just like you said. I thought I was doing it wrong until the clear made it shine.
