I have an old paint gun which I used to paint a few things. Now that I am looking at buying a new gun, I have a question about nozzle sizes. There are many different sizes, but from what I conclude, 1.4mm is for the top coat, 1.7mm or 2.0mm is used for primer, and 1.0mm is for touch up. Am I correct on these assumptions?

Mostly. In my opinion the 1.0 is best suited for touch up guns. I use a 1.3 for topcoat, 1.8 for surfacer, and a 1.3-1.5 for epoxy primer. A 2.0 is going to be like a fire hose. You can force surfacer through a 1.3 if you want -- It will not go on smooth, but you have to sand it anyway. I prefer dedicated guns for each product.

Thanks for the info. I was looking at a gun kit that comes with 3 guns. They are 1.0, 1.4, and 1.8.

You can use the 1.4 for thinner primers and topcoats, the 1.8 for thick primers, my guess would be that the 1.0 is a touch up gun, not many full size come with a 1.0 standard. You can use the 1.0 (if it is a touch up (detail or "jamb" gun) for small areas. I use my 1.0 touch up gun 2 or 3 times more than the full size. A 1.0 in a touch up gun is equivalent to a 1.3-1.4 in a full size. I have a 1.4 in a touch up gun, also a 1.0; the 1.4 is too coarse for topcoats, in my opinion, thus the 1.0 that replaced it, except for primer.
