I'm no pro painter by any means but just finished painting a cultivator useing the JD paint in the rattle can and it did turn out nice. Just wondering if clear coat would help preserve it? Is clear coat available in rattle cans? Any input appreciated.

you should be able to clear over it, the rattle can is probably an enamel. use a clear with a uv filter like cnks recommended. clears are not as agressive at biting in as a base coat, dont sand the rattle can paint before you clear it, just wipe it down with a prep sol type cleaner. use an enamel clear if the base coat is enamel.

I am positively no expert but I have a couple of thoughts on this. First, unless you can mix a hardener with the clear coat I don't think it will be any better than the paint under it although it may prolong the shine a while and I think it would give at least some minimal protection. That's the biggest probem with rattle can paint...no hardener.

And last, any clear coat you cover the green with will have to be compatible or it'll lift or fry up. I've learned both of these simple lessons the hard way.

I expect there is a hardener available to use with the non-rattle can JD paint but it would have to put on with a spray gun.

I am by no means a clear coat expert, but for clear to give any protection it has to have UV inhibitors in it to prevent fading, that is your biggest problem with the cheaper paints. I doubt if rattle can does. B maniac, Rod(NH), Glenster (if I didn't spell your name right, please forgive me), and others whom my dead brain can't think of right will have more info than me.

Clear coat is also designed to be applied over a base product within a certain window of time in order to adhere properly. (wet on wet) To do what you are suggesting , you very well may have de-lamination of the clear in a few months in the sun and elements. Personally , I would leave it alone. You are working with the bottom of the food chain with these products and predictability is NOT their strong suite. I agree with the rest , rattle can clear is no better than the paint you have on it now. Save your time and money.

Thanks for the feedback. I was in Lowes Saturday and Rustoleum does have a clear coat that is non-yellowing and has uv protection. I might just try an area and see if does any good even though I will be wasting my time and money.
