I am rebuilding an Oliver 1655, and the block and head will soon come back from the machine shop. They have been hot tanked and then blasted, so they are bare cast. I want to coat them asap to prevent rust, but the only place I have heat I can't get an air compressor too. It is much to cold to paint without heat. I'd like to use spray can primer on the bare metal to give it some protection. I am planning on painting the entire tractor in the spring with acrylic enamel. How will this work over the rust oleum primer? I dont want to have to remove the primer, just scuff it and paint. Any other ideas?

Don"t want to use primer due to build up/NO PROBLEM. Either at Home Depot or Wal-Marts they carry Rustoleum Epoxy "Refrigerator" spray paint. Does not require a primer on bare metal. Made that way so the hard epoxy paint is sitting on bare metal without soft primer under it to make the paint more impact resistant. Comes only in Black, White & Almond currently. I use it on the primed metal insulated doors for home entrances. BEAUTIFUL finish that lasts for YEARS!!!

I'd be more worried about rust on the insides if it's going to be where it rusts ? Any old paint or primer will help the outsides.

I wondered about that too. I thought a lot of castings had some kind of coating on the inside. Not after blasting. It will be kept inside, but I was afraid the bare cast would rust pretty easily. I am planning on building the engine up pretty quickly once its back, so the inside should have oil on it to protect it.

Josh,

Glyptal is the common coating that is used on the inside of engine blocks, etc. if you wanted to go the extra mile. Machined surfaces like the cylinder walls, etc. can be protected with a light coating of oil (after the epoxy and any interior paint dry, of course). The interior coolant passages of the head could be blocked off to keep moist air out if you are concerned with any rusting in that area, although I think it would be minor and of no real consequence over the winter since you are at least keeping it in out of the rain.

Hi Josh,

If I were in your situation, I'd use a Preval Sprayer with a two-part epoxy primer such as PPG's OMNI MP170. You'd have to scuff with a Scotch-Brite pad and reapply another coat of epoxy just before your topcoat later on, but that's not hard to do. That would provide the very best protection for your parts until you can get to them in the spring.

Your suggestion made me think of another idea. I have a wagner electric sprayer. It won't lay down the nicest finish, but on the cast I don't think it will be too bad. I might practice on something, but I think I'll try to prime it using expoxy primer and the wagner. Thanks!

Probably this is not the best suggestion but I have sprayed both urethane paint and acrylic enamel over Rustoleum auto primer and experienced no problems at all. One of the paint jobs is several years old now. I would use only the auto primer though.
