The clear coat on my 1990 Chrysler LeBaron has really deteriorated of the years. I am not used to the procedures to re-paint the car over this clear coat. Must I remove the clear coat first?
Plan on using a quality paint when I finish the job next year!

Thanks....John,PA

we have done quite a number of delam repaints. you need to get all the old clear off as well as the base coat. if you shoot over it , it will still peel. sand off the rest to the primer coat. use 220 grit on a d-a sander. sand flat , dont climb up on the edge of the da. you dont need to sand down to bare metal, the factory e coat primer is good stuff, so try not to disturb it. you can shoot a sealer over the factory primer, something like dupont 1984s. the delam occured because the base coat would not bind to the clear coat, the clear would blow off. check with your local paint supplier as far as what sealer you are goint to use with your paint product. i have been doing this close to 30 years here at the shop, dont cut corners, use the best products you can afford. when you consider all the labor to prep and paint something, and the high cost of materials, i have found its better to do it right the first time, and use the good materials. the cost differential between the economy lines and the high line paint products is generally 25-30%. if you use a budget product, and it doesnt work, you start from square one, and you have now doubled both your labor and material costs.

What you are refering to is the delamination of the clear from the base coat. Very common problem from the "experimental" days at auto co's. Yes you will need to remove all the old clear from the base coat. The clear will sand off white. When you see colored sanding dust, that means you are through the clear. You probably should put down some sort of catylized primer over the sanded base coat before refinishing.

I was think'N 'bout just removing the paint clear down to the metal. Sanding will be a lot more convenient, here. Thanks again. John,PA
