Does anyone know a paint co. that sells John Deere "classic green" in either a base coat clear coat or acrilic enamel? The only classic I have been able to find is at the J.D. dealer and it only comes in synthetic enamel . Thanks for the help

I"m not sure how to word this because I don"t want to anger anyone but if you are really particular the classic green paint is actually only "correct" for a certain number of years. The thing is that the paint shade has changed several times over the years. There are guys that have taken great pains to research their paint and have come up with shades that differ from either the classic or ag green. Research has found that the yellow paint used prior to the mid 30"s on tractors was more of a cremey yellow color that the bright yellow most of us use on wheels today. It all comes back to preference of the owner and how far he wants to go.

The thing is with paint is that today most equipment is painted with a specialized process that is not easily duplicated in a farm shop or even a body shop. Not too many people have access to an E-coat paint line (combines) or a full oven system to bake the tractor after painting. The paints are precicely formulated to be optimized for the process that they will be used in. The paint used to paint hay balers most likely isn"t even sourced from the same manufacturer as the tractors.

FYI I have been painting with Ag Yellow / Ag Green equivalents. It isn"t a match for the orginal paint for the tractors I have painted on but neither is classic. Dad likes the ag green color better.

A fellow brought me a tractor to paint and the paint he brought was "(Classic Green) which is what the dealer sells. He wanted a first class "show" quality job, and that is hard to do with a synthetic enamel. That is why I was looking for a formula for the base coat clear coat in the factory "Classic Green) color. I had a paint rep scan the color and he did indeed come up with a formula for the base coat clear coat. The tractor has been paintd and the results were worth the trouble.I will be happy to e-mail the formula to anyone who might be interested.

PPG/DuPont/Sherwin Williams/Martin Senour/NAPA/Valspar, etc. You have to give them the correct number. I imagine "classic green" comes in many shades, and that one companie's classic green is not the same as another companie's. B-maniac will have some ideas when he sees this post.

I have done a LOT of looking , comparing and headaching over this subject and have found a PPG code (cause that's what I use) that they can make in whatever type paint you want. I use Deltron Base Coat , code 43817, for many reasons I won't go into here. My research and comparisons have led me to this mix and for my money it is what they all will get.(2 cyl. JD) And let me tell you , I hate re-doing anything on them!! Just to protect myself though , I can only say this about base coat mixed at my paint store by my paint man. I believe you would have the same color shade no matter which "type" paint and no matter where you had it mixed because PPG is consistenty consistent. BUT! I won't say it's a fact because I havn't tried them all. By the way , they don't all assign the name "Classic Green " to their formula,s. Not many do. Just be ready , though , because after you're done , someone will tell you it is the wrong color and that BC/CC is the wrong system. I guess because they were painted with 1930,s technology paint back then , you must duplicate that.Make sure and use only non-detergent oil and just water in the rad. and drain it when it gets cold. I don't know what you will do for decals since all the replacements available today will look better and age better than originals. Tires? Same deal.(he-ha) Since you can't 100% duplicate an original tractor , then why not do it up as good as your time and money and abilities will let you? The only ones you will hear "policing" your tractor are the ones who's don't quite cut it.Usually they will use the words "mine looks more original" for a tractor wire brushed and brush painted. Each to his own , we all got started somewhere.

B-maniac,

Thanks for the color code for the green. Do you have a color code for the yellow to match. Trying to get my 44 b back to #1 condition. Thanks

I finally had the "classic" mixed at my son,s body shop after the R&M paint rep took paint sample photos and with the high tec equipment came up with a formula. After mixing the paint we compared it to the "classic" green that came from the John Deere dealer, and we had a near perfect match. As far as I was concerned the dealer paint was fine, although I am not crazy about synthetic enamels, but I am re-doing a tractor for a customer that wants "show" quality. Anyhow, the tractor is ow painted with a base coat clear coat and looks great. Thanks for all of your in put.
