Painting an old Lessmann tractor. Got a question on using hardner. I am using inexpensive BPS paint. Am applying several coats of paint. Question do you just use hardner in the final coat only or do you mix it in with each coat? I have applied one coat of paint without hardner and was planning on using hardner in my final coat. Is this proper? Ape there any precautions?

if your going to use hardener in the paint it needs to be in all the coats. putting it in the last coat will seal all the previous coats, preventing them from off gassing and drying properly.

Yes there are precautions. The first one, as you probably already know , is wear a supplied air respirator. The second is , there is a recommended time window to apply succesive coats of catylized paint. ie , you can't apply 1 full coat today at 1:00 and the other at 4:00. The second will wrinkle (lift) the half cured skin of the first one. Look up the tech. data sheet on the paint you are using. If there isn't one , then a half hour between coats is a good rule of thumb. Like glennster said , YES you have to use catylist in ALL coats. I would make sure the coat you now have on is fully cured (2 mos. at least at 70 degrees)before continuing. If you need to do it earlier , you may get away with it since you only put on 1 coat in the first place??? How lucky are you ??
